Service Description

Are you a practised poet wanting to take your work to the next level? Maybe you’re having trouble telling your syllabics and sestinas apart, or can’t quite crack the rhyme scheme in Shakespearean sonnet? Perhaps, you’re just curious of how to best edit and present your writing to help it along the road to publication. Join Shout or Whisper’s modestly titled ‘Master of Poetry’ Tom on a 6-week journey where he’ll guide you through different types of rhyme, explain the mechanics of poetic forms like villanelles and sonnets, and help you explore styles like confessionalism, objectivism and ekphrasis. There’ll be plenty of examples provided, lots of writing exercises to cut your teeth on, and ample opportunities to share your work in a safe space with a group of supportive, likeminded creatives. 4th November Defining Poetry [Marianne Moore, Emily Dickinson, Steve Martin] 11th November The Object Poem [William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, H.D.] 18th November Forms of Modern Poetry [William Shakespeare, Elizabeth Bishop, Raych Jackson] 25th November Confessional Poetry and the Persona [Sylvia Plath, John Berryman, W.D. Snodgrass] 2nd December Developing Rhyme and Reason [Claude McKay, Shel Silverstein, MF Doom] 9th December Ekphrastic Poetry and Mixing Mediums [W.H. Auden, Anne Sexton, John Keats]
